Overhaul update

The inside of the smokebox saddle has been fully cleaned and a coat of heat resistant paint applied. Prominent are the four branch pipes from the steam chests to a manifold below the blastpipe, neither shown.

In front of the smokebox saddle is a running plate on which the fireman would stand when emptying the smokebox. It had been lifted, the area below cleaned and pained, and here it seen back in place, providing a more secure platform for the Fund’s volunteers to work on.

The SVR asked that the slidebars be removed for grinding back to a correct profile. Both Right Hand bars and the lower Left Hand bar are now off; the Left Hand upper is ready to be removed, but the lack of space to the wall prevents the necessary long levers being used to move it, so it will remain loose but in situ until the next time the loco is moved outside.

It has been known for some time that some of the below-floor platework under the cab’s left hand side was corroded, and a decision has been made to replace the damaged sections. This will involve the removal of the Left Hand cab side, or at least the lower portion. Unlike other Stanier locos, these engines’ cab sides were in two pieces joined a foot or so below the side windows.
