Overhaul update
All rivets securing the backplate to the firebox sides below gauge frame level have been removed; it is likely that only this lower part of the backplate will be replaced.
Also removed are the rivets around the firehole.
Also the rivets securing the backplate to the foundation ring have been removed
Many of the lower side stays have also been removed and pilot holes drilled in others.
The rivets securing the front tube plate to the barrel have all been burned out and nuts to the longitudinal stays removed.
The tubeplate is now ready to be removed. This will happen when the boiler is being relocated; the opportunity to stand it vertically and lift out the tubeplate with the overhead crane will be taken.
After weeks of work by Fund members in drilling pilot holes in the securing rivets of the hind buffer beam, these were finally burned out and the beam itself removed by the Tuesday gang, to whom we are most grateful. The beam itself is seen lying on tressles. It will be used as a template for a new one to be cut from fresh steel.
The rear of the loco is shown. Ahead of the buffer beam were four longitudinal stretchers forming part of the dragbox. These are all in excellent condition, but it has been decided to remove the two outer stretchers at least to allow better access to the lower dragbox horizontal plate, to examine its condition and allow better access for cleaning and painting if it is to be retained.
The right hand stretcher can be seen lying on its side; the left hand one has only two of its nine securing bolts and nuts holding it in place.
The reach rod was disconnected at both ends several months ago but left lying on the running plate. Its turn has come and it was taken down and the inevitable cleaning work begun prior to repainting.
