Overhaul update

The new smokebox number plate on the radial drill shortly after the fixing holes were drilled and countersunk.

The pipes from the Left hand cylinder drain cocks have been separated, cleaned and roughly polished before refitting with their newly painted clamping clips, which can be seen as the two “black things” hanging on the wall behind the pipes.

Graham Bennett refits the Left hand piston complete with piston rings. The steel strips are being used to help ease the piston rings past the steam port at the top front of the cylinder.

Following re-fitting of the pistons, the studs for securing the cylinder front covers in place are in the process of being replaced. The large tap in your volunteer’s hand is used to clear each hole of debris before fitting the new stud.

This was followed by temporarily fitting the front cylinder covers in place. The Right hand one is seen here...

...And the Left hand one here. They are secured by only four nuts as their purpose is to aid valve setting, and they will come off again after this has been done.

A minor problem is that the Right hand union link and combination lever are currently about a quarter inch out of alignment.

While beside it are parts awaiting fitment. Lower is the liner which fits in the bottom of the smokebox; then the upper part of the ring by which the smokebox attaches to the boiler barrel; and the door liner.
