This shows the upper plate of the drag box having the rear flange skimmed true on the milling machine to correct the slight distortion caused by welding.
The trailing driving wheel set being lowered from the frames on the wheel drop. This was to allow access to the rivets holding the front cross member of the old drag box.
Now our loco is an 0-4-0.
From last Thursday we can see the riveting that has already been done on the rear “buffer” beam and the rubbing plates - right side in this shot
This is the left side.
The left hand side showing the new snap had (round head) rivets.
Heating a new rivet prior to fitting it.
The red hot rivet is supported on the inside of the frames while the outside is hammered into the countersunk hole using a pneumatic hammer.
The now cool rivet in place to the left of the weld. These rivets have to be flat in this area otherwise they would foul the backs of the trailing driving wheels.
Moving on to the machine shop, some shots of work in progress ready for the future. The expansion links back from grinding and in the process of having new bolts made to replace the old (and tatty) ones seen here.
One of the afore mentioned new bolts being screwcut on one of the workshop’s lathes.
