Overhaul update
A discussion in the boilershop with SVR boiler smith, and two of the Fund’s volunteers on progress with the boiler.
The foundation ring has been crack detected, hence the white colouring. The few cracks found are being ground out and weld repaired.
At the smokebox end, the patch repair to the front of the barrel has had the preliminary welds firmly attaching it to the barrel itself. This job will be completed when the new tubeplate is in place.
Back on the loco, the bellcrank from the steam brake cylinder is fitted and the new lubrication pipework attached. The bushes on which the crank rotates might need to be removed, hence for now are secured by only two bolts per side.
These are new spring hangers being worked on in the machine shop. The heads must be ground down so as to fit within the brackets, as seen in previous updates. This is done initially by milling, as here, but will be finished by hand grinding.
