Overhaul update
The new rear buffer beam temporarily in place, ensuring accurate alignment of the frame extensions during the welding process.
Grinding of the new rear buffer beam is in progress.
The welds themselves, in close up on the left hand side.
The inside connections between the frame extensions and buffer beam. The attaching brackets are also new. The fastenings are temporary bolts only, but the assembly will eventually be riveted.
The floor behind the left hand trailing coupled wheel before brushing up, and littered with the stubs of used welding rods.
This cross stretcher will mount the firebox transverse stay once fitted. The original wasted stretcher cannot be removed until the trailing wheelset has been dropped out, probably within the next few weeks. This photo shows the rear face viewed from what will become the top.
The two mechanical lubricators awaiting attention, the far one being marked ‘ Axlebox’, the nearer one ‘Cylinders’.
Underneath the front end in the space normally occupied by the pony truck. These show the pin which locates the truck slides to provide the centring action.
One of the semi-spheres by which the loco’s weight is transferred to the pony truck. Note the oil delivery pipework being refitted and / or renewed.
Oil connectors to the pony truck horn guides. Rubber hoses attach to these to allow for the swing of the truck. There is another pair behind the photographer to supply the trailing horns.
