Overhaul update

The rear frames of the loco following the cutting back of the wasted sections. The left hand frame is as cut, but the new extension is in position on the right hand side.

The actual joint between the old and new plates. The butting edges are first ground to a V shape to allow the weld to penetrate to the full 1 1/16 inches of the plate.

The actual welding will be coded; here the plate is merely tacked to retain it in position during the welding process.

The outer lower floors had to be removed to allow full access to the repair area. This will allow their condition to be fully assessed and any necessary remedial work to be undertaken.

The purpose of the dragbox is to transfer the power of the loco to the tender, and from there to the train. It needs to be substantial. This shows the reinforcement for the dragbox itself.

The new drawbar pin which will transfer the power from the loco to the tender, and from there to the train.

While the frames and dragbox are receiving much attention, work continues in other areas. Top of this view is the left hand combination lever; bottom is the corresponding radius rod. All motion bushes are to be replaced.

Here we see the two return crank rods, with the rear of the other radius rod on the floor underneath.

The brake stretchers, painted and now marked for the sizes of their outer ends, allowing new bushes to be turned to size.
